Howyabud outduels Decisive Triumph in thrilling finish to Kiser at Saratoga
By Tod Marks
Irv Naylor’s Howyabud, always well placed in the field of six, rallied turning for home and outfinished Holwood Stable’s Decisive Triumph in this afternoon’s $75,000 Jonathan Kiser novice stakes at 2 1/16 miles at the Spa.
Ridden by Barry Foley, Howyabud grabbed the lead at the top of the stretch and battled Decisive Triumph and Jamie Bargary for the entire length of the stretch. It wasn’t until the duo was past the sixteenth pole that Howyabud, the $2.60-1 favorite, inched away from his rival, who had held the lead from the start.
With the win, the five-year-old Irish-bred son of Milan ran his U.S. record to a perfect two for two for trainer Keri Brion. He captured his NSA debut in an allowance race at Great Meadow in May. Prior to that, he had a win and a pair of seconds in three previous European starts.
